Little Baddow Cricket Club Sunday NECL XI v Bocking on Sun 22 Apr 2007 at 1.00pm
Little Baddow Cricket Club Won 6 wickets
The Sunday PDQ League began their new campaign in Division 3 after two consecutive promotions and with the pitch and the conditions more suitable to July, a won toss would normally have led to having a bat. However, I felt that our batting was a little fragile as far as depth was concerned and decided to insert Bocking who were playing in Div. 2 last season.
Bocking's openers showed early aggression on Glen's normally tight opening spell although John Tierney kept them at bay from the other end. However Glen picked a return catch to stall their momentum and this was followed by the dynamic duo of Alex Franklin and Chris Harmer bowling excellent spells in tandem. The rate was steady but unspectacular even with few wickets falling. Another younster, Leo Willan bowled a tidy debut spell which augured well for the future.
With Bocking closing on 216 - 5 after their 45 overs, it seemed a job well done as this was clearly a below par score on our pitch. I decided to open with Chris Salmon and John Tierney and hide myself at number 6 with a view to hopefully having one of our three experienced batsman at the crease for the majority of the innings. I love it when a plan comes together!
After an aggressive opening in which we raced to 40 in very few overs, John took on the mid on for a quick single and came out second best. This was followed by a couple more quick wickets before Chris steadied the ship with the help of another of our younguns, Tom Smith, who was finally out for very useful 16.
With over a hundred still required and a somewhat longish looking tail to follow, Chris and I, with the run rate not an issue, needed to simply bat sensibly to move towards the target. With Chris providing the attacking flair and myself being.....well, Steve Harmer really, we duly obliged with Chris finishing unbeaten on 117 and myself on 27 with 9 overs to spare.
An excellent start to what we hope will be another successful season built on our youth (we had 5 under 17s or below).
