Little Baddow Cricket Club Sunday XI v Willow Herbs on Sun 15 Apr 2007 at 1.30
Match was Drawn
On a scorching hot day, a Sunday XI set about opening the season with a solid start. With some hoping to build upon technical work practiced over the winter, others playing for the first time in a while, and a new recruit to the club eager to impress, we got underway at around 1.30pm. The skipper Malcolm lost the toss and we were batting. We got off to a solid start, with some infamous Vickery dabs and the pure ferocity of our newest Australian, John. Our new recruit certainly did impress, blasting with brute force to an innings that concluded when he retired on 127*. Our batting was very strong overall, and with John picking out just about every part of the ground, he was ably assisted as well. The likes of David Woolford, Jamie Greenwood and Charlie Maddy played their parts, the first playing three good shots for four and the latter looking like a certain West Indian captain at the crease! The innings concluded as Adam Higgins attempted to maximise the Little Baddow score, but despite a despairing dive, was run out for 1 after facing 1 ball. With a good total on the board, early wickets were a necessity, and with a shortage of ‘strike’ bowlers, Higgins and Stuart Bucknell opened. It was Higgins that took the break-through with an outrageously overzealous lbw appeal which resulted in a wicket. Then, soon after, Higgins struck again thanks to a stunning running catch from Steve Harmer. As Higgins got into a rhythm, things were looking promising, and with a third wicket to follow a game was made of it. Higgins was then forced to come out of the attack due to restrictions over the amount of overs that can be bowled by a young pace-man. Wickets then came from John, Stuart and Declan, but the team from Blackmore crept back into the tie and there was a period of uncertainty for LB. However, we kept it tight and forced them to defend for a draw rather than attack for the win. John finished his bowling spell nicely and rounded off a pleasing performance as the game ended as a tie. All in all it was a good work-out for everyone concerned and there were some very impressive moments from everyone.
