Abberton 2 v Little Baddow Cricket Club Sunday NECL XI on Mon 27 Aug 2007 at 1.00pm
Little Baddow Cricket Club Lost 34 runs
What a difference a weekend makes. Having seen Cavaliers lose and open the door last week to the title, we fell to a second defeat in consecutive days.
We lost the toss again and on a hard, flat track not dissimilar to what we're used to at Riffhams, Abberton opted to bat. Things started better than we could have dreamt as Duncan B. deflected a firm drive onto the stumps to run out the non striking opener and two balls later bowled the other one to leave them at 0-2 after 11 balls. However, that's where the good news ended, Henderson and Pike put on 128 for the third wicket before the former was stumped in the 28th over.
Pike continued with various support to a chanceless unbeaten 126 and with the wickets in hand Abberton were able to accelerate to 254-5 by the close. The pick of the bowling was without doubt Stuart Bucknell who had Henderson in knots and was unlucky to finish with just that wicket in his 10 overs. The other highlight was Duncan getting an almost identical run out later in the innings.
Although the target was a testing one, we had enough batting in depth to have a chance. Unfortunately, we too had two wickets down against some tight bowling within 6 overs with only 10 on the board. Duncan and Rob batted well to take us to 76 in the 19th over before they were out for 48 and 33 respectively. With the run rate increasing, it was almost a repeat of the day before in that batsmen got in and then got out as the card shows. Runs were there for the taking on an excellent pitch but we fell 34 short in the end with a nice knock from Stuart B. and a cameo from Glen taking us comfortably past 200.
Fortunately, a look at the table after the weekend confirms our promotion with 2 games to spare, albeit it not as champions, unless a miracle happens,
