Kirby v Little Baddow Cricket Club Sunday NECL XI on Sun 03 Jun 2007 at 2.00pm
Little Baddow Cricket Club Won 4 wickets
Kirby won the toss and elected to bat on a patchy looking wicket. An early breakthrough by James Stevens turned out to be our only success in the first 20 overs. The oppo's skipper Wilson threatened to put a big total on the board notably when hitting the first 5 balls of one of Glen's early overs for 4. However, despite being around 100 for 1 at the 20 over point, the brakes were put on by John Tierney and the stand in skipper Stuart Robinson with John finishing with 4-29 from his 10 overs and the innings closed at 184-7.
Once more, we lost a couple of early wickets and when the skipper was out for 24 we were 40-3 in the 12th over. At this point, Jamie Greenwood was joined by John and the pair put on 71 for the next wicket in the next 10 overs before Jamie was bowled for 42 by Laws' first delivery that turned "a mile". Kirby clearly had little bowling in depth and had gambled on their two openers doing the business, bowling them both out in the first 20 overs.
With the exception of Laws the rest of the bowling was indifferent and this led to one of the highlights of the day. John despatched bowler number 5 for 3 fours from his first 3 deliveries but then missed the attempted fourth and returned to the hutch with 60 to his name and ribbing from both sides!
However, victory was in sight and James Stevens guided us home with an unbeaten 33 by 4 wickets with plenty of overs to spare. We now move into the second round of the cup for a home tie with West Mersea from division 1 and a chance to avenge last season's defeat at the hands of the same side.
