A picturesque ground with a large, mature oak tree at the edge of the square, making for an interesting local rule that the ball is still in play if it hits the tree. An overcast day and a wicket that, though hard, had some patchy grass on it, so we inserted the oppostion. The innings started well for us with swing and seam movement troubling the batsmen. The home team were 39 for 3 with Ross looking particularly threatening. However, several dropped catches and some sloppy ground fielding let them off the hook and runs began to flow freely. It proved difficult to stem the tide and, with the notable exception of Michael Wood's ground fielding and 2 excellent catches by young Alex Jenkins, including a skyer on the boundary, we did not improve. Copford accelerated and reached a total of 247 for 6 in their 45 overs, including a remarkable 62 extras, though several of the wides and no balls seemed somewhat questionable.
Nonetheless, we set off with high expectations and, despite the loss of Steve Harmer early on, we were reasonably placed at 54 for 1 after a dozen overs.We then lost 3 wickets in as many overs, but David Walker and James Stevens rebuilt and put on 79 for the 5th wicket before an unfortunate mix up left James stranded to be run out for 40. This proved the turning point as 2 more wickets fell quickly, including Stuart to a dubious low catch claimed by the fielder. David followed soon after for 51, attempting to push on the scoring rate, and with the game now beyond reach, the only target was 200 to achieve maximum batting points. Youngsters Adam Harris and Alex Jenkins added 20 for the last wicket to achieve this in the final over before Alex was run out to the last ball of the innings.
