Abberton & Dist III v Little Baddow Cricket Club Sunday NECL XI on Sun 12 Jun 2005 at 2pm
Little Baddow Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
We fielded first at Abberton's lovely ground with the usual balance of 4 elder statesmen and 7 teenagers. (In fact, I'm embarrassed to note that the combined ages of the first 3 bowlers doesn't add up to mine!)
Matt Beardall and James Stevens took the new ball and James removed the Abberton opener with an absolute peach of a delivery in his first over, late inswing beating the inside edge and clipping the top of the off stump. Progress thereafer was very slow against some tidy bowling from all of the youngsters, with Chris Harmer particularly miserly, conceding just 8 runs from 8.2 overs. With wickets falling regularly, the home side innings ended in the 40th over for a total of just 114. For the second week running, extras was the highest contribution, totalling 32 including 24 wides. The youngsters continue to perform well, though there is room for improvement in the field, both with catching and ground fielding, and the bowlers need to work at eradicating the wide deliveries.
Our innings got off to a good start, with Steve Harmer in particular looking in good touch as he stroked several early boundaries on both sides of the wicket. Matt Beardall weighed in with some powerful shots and we progressed to 69 in the 14th over before the fall of the first wicket. Thereafter, progress slowed a little and we reached the target for the loss of 3 wickets in the 32nd over. Young Adam Harris played very well, looking solid in defence and playing some well struck straight drives into the v for an unbeaten 27.
