We took the field on a pleasant, sunny late September afternoon and, despite losing an early wicket, the visitors got off to a reasonable start to be handily placed at 94 for 1 after 20 overs. The introduction of the younger element of our bowling attack bought swift reward, however, with Alex Franklin and Chris Harmer striking in quick succession. The fourth wicket added a further 46 runs but at a slower run rate, before Alex F struck twice more, including the important wicket of the opener S Gilhooly for an excellent 93 (great catch Chris H). Although wickets were hard to come by on a placid track, the run rate didn't increase and the innings closed at 203 for 7. Alex F (3 for 32) and Chris H (2 for 25) off 10 overs each were the pick of the bowlers.
204 should be a reasonably easy target at our ground, but we made hard work of it in the gathering gloom as the clouds rolled in after tea. Andy Harris looked relatively untroubled throughout, but no one was able to hang around with him for very long and several of us perished playing aerial shots to poor deliveries. At 104 for 7 in the 24th over, the match was ebbing away from us, but the trusty Paul Maskell provided the support Andy needed and un unbroken stand of exactly 100 took us to victory with an over and a bit to spare. Andy struck the winning boundary to take his personal score to a well deserved 101 not out.
